The Ultimate Indonesian Vacation at NIHI Sumba

You may have explored Bali, seen the ancient temples in Ubud, or gotten a taste of city life in Jakarta, but even the most seasoned travelers haven’t heard of the island of Sumba. Located off the coast of Eastern Indonesia, Sumba is best known for its lush forests and waterfalls and incredible surfing. Often considered the quiet alternative to Bali, Sumba entices travelers to experience its deep-rooted cultural traditions and ancient tribal culture. Consistently ranked as a top hotel on Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best list, NIHI Sumba pairs laid-back luxury with down-to-earth activities like yoga with horses and surfing with locals.

Checking In

After a 50-minute flight from Bali to Sumba and a two-hour drive to the resort, check into what NIHI Sumba refers to as “the Edge of Wilderness.” Sumba’s lush forested expanse is immediately transformed into manicured jungle on the grounds of the resort. You might immediately notice the Sandalwood horses that freely roam the beach, whether they are cooling off in the ocean among the surfers or strolling the beach among sunbathers and swimmers.

Accommodations

There are 27 thatched-roof villas, each with a private pool and deck, ranging from one to four bedrooms with spectacular views of the Indian Ocean and Nihiwatu Beach. You’ll find it hard to be torn away from these ultra-luxe accommodations, with sleek Indonesian-style beach design elements, but at peace knowing you can retreat back to your sanctuary by night.

For larger groups, there is also the Owner’s Estate that includes six villas in total spread out over a large expanse. There is a main house with a lap pool and cold plunge pool, a library, living room, indoor dining room, and kitchen. The other two-story villas include many family rooms and lounging areas and there is aso a one-bedroom cottage on a secluded corner of the property.

There is also the Secret Villa, an ultra-private villa atop the Spa Safari. There are views of rolling rice fields and cliff top views of the Indian Ocean and beyond. It’s perfect for those who crave privacy and seclusion.

Activities

Surfing is a massive draw for travelers, and is one of the most renowned spots for surfers. Reserve your spot with a NIHI surf instructor, who can take you surfing on Nihiwatu beach or the nearby Coconut Cove.

The resort tailors to people of all ages, including children, and there’s a bevy of sea, land, cultural, and culinary experiences to enjoy. From deep-sea fishing to hiking and sightseeing to cultural immersions with locals, the resort offers bespoke experiences depending on your interests. You can even learn how to cook traditional meals or take a mixology class.

Cultural experiences on offer also include philanthropic initiatives, like visiting the Sumba Foundation that gives back to the local community. You can enjoy a Market and at Shop Tour and even learn about the local tradition of Ikat weaving and engage in other local customs.

Wellness is also a key component of the NIHI experience. There is an award-winning NIHI Spa Safari, a spa that offers sea salt scrubs, mud wraps, coconut water hair washes, and signature NIHI massages. There are also yoga classes in the yoga pavilion.

Dining

There are two restaurants within the resort: Omabk Restaurant (Ombak means ‘wave front’). This open-air restaurant serves breakfast and dinner with local flavors and globally inspired menus. For lunch or snacks, the Nio Beach Club and Pool is another open-air restaurant with fresh seafood, grilled vegetables and meats, and freshly made pizzas from the wood-fired clay oven. Healthy and delicious, the culinary experiences introduce you to a flavor profile reminiscent of the local cuisine.
